Some of you are considering leaving your career entirely and pivoting; others are still trying to move to a new role with a step up in promotion. Still, most would be happy with the same role at a different company. But I believe in the path of least resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving into a competing product within the same role is your best bet for an easy transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how do you do the competitive research to find these companies? Follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-google-company-name-competitors\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Google_%E2%80%9Ccompany_name_competitors%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>1. Google \u201c[company name] competitors\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This will disclose ads being spent against your company, and the search results will help develop your initial bucket of competing products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-g2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_G2\"><\/span>2. G2<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>G2 creates a \u201cTop 10 Alternatives &amp; Competitors\u201d page for every company profile on its platform. The first five companies listed on this page are usually your direct competitors, whom you should look at for job openings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-product-hunt\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Product_Hunt\"><\/span>3. Product Hunt<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is your go-to for early-stage companies. Product Hunt has a curated page of early-stage companies that are competitors to your previous employer in its \u201cBest [company] alternatives\u20142024\u201d section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-crunchbase\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Crunchbase\"><\/span>4. Crunchbase<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Within Crunchbase, you can find everything from a company\u2019s stage to its top employees, recent news, and my favorite tab, \u201cSimilar Companies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-linkedin\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Linkedin\"><\/span>5. Linkedin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you do now that you have a short list of 5-10 competitors to your previous employer? Search Linkedin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Follow the competing companies on Linkedin<\/strong>&nbsp;and reach out to the people who would be your future boss and team members.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Look at their open jobs for opportunities.<\/strong>&nbsp;If you see a similar role, this is your \u201cin\u201d. Don\u2019t wait. Reach out immediately and look for a referral who can get you started on your application.<br><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Email the hiring manager with a solid pitch.&nbsp;<\/strong>Reach out, let them know what you did in your previous role and how it applies to the role they\u2019re filling, and include your PDF resume. But remember that your resume isn\u2019t attachable to your initial message. Instead, provide a Google Docs link to your resume in the message.
