Responsibilities

Participate in, and occasionally lead, system level microfluidic and mechanical architecture discussions/decisions
Lead module and subsystem level design from beginning of ideation to end of development process
Use FEA and other modeling techniques to design pneumatic and fluidic elements
Implementation of multistep molecular biology protocols in microfluidic devices across a wide range of chemistries using common scripting languages on purpose-built hardware and software
Injection mold design for microfluidic devices and other plastic consumables
Participate in design review process for both mechanical systems and microfluidic devices
Participate in planning for module and subsystem development
Incorporate best practices in DFM, DFR, DFA, DFS and user interaction
Complete project deliverables on time and on budget with minimal supervision
Lead and support, as needed, improvements to on-market products
Participate in product troubleshooting and root cause analyses to evaluate issues in order to implement corrective actions and resolutions in a timely manner
Participate in design and manufacturing FMEA
Help to improve and implement departmental best practices
Ensure success of fellow departments by lending expertise as required
Research and stay abreast of the latest industry trends in core technologies, manufacturing capabilities, vendor offerings, and market needs to drive product innovation.

Required

BEng in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or similar with demonstrated experience (preferably 5+ years) in design of automated biotechnology and/or microfluidic instrumentation
Good working knowledge of complementary disciplines eg. optical, electrical, motion systems, pneumatic systems, microfluidics
Proficiency with Solidworks and AutoCAD
Disciplined in GD&T practices with close attention to datum establishment and tolerance stack-up
Excellent working understanding of Solidworks PDM and its workflows
Good knowledge of Solidworks FEA packages for thermal, flow and mechanical analyses
Demonstrated understanding and use of the scientific method
Demonstrated history of excellence in DFX and user interaction
Understanding of regulated quality systems (e.g. ISO 13485) and applicable product safety standards (e.g., CE, UL, ROHS, REACH)
Excellent written and oral communication skills and a proven ability to work well on a multi-disciplinary team; explains complex information to others in straightforward manner
Demonstrated ability to create test plans including design verification, qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ), and NPI acceptance plans
Good initiative and willingness to research in order to influence design decisions, critical thinker willing to challenge assumptions, self-motivated and willing to learn, enjoys a faster-paced environment and is open to critical feedback
Ability to work full-time on-site
Ability to travel up to 10% (domestic and international) when necessary

Preferred

PhD in Physical Sciences or Engineering with 2+ publications and 2+ patent filings on microfluidic applications
Experience in Lean environments and associated tools: Standard Work, A3 creation, Bowler generation, PDCA Problem Solving
Experience designing and prototyping electronic subsystems and test fixtures
Experience with BOM structuring and BOM risk management
Knowledgeable in Python or other languages for scripted automation and/or data processing tools
