Responsibilities

Mediates and facilitates communication between people in the WVU community through the effective, accurate, and impartial use of manual language. Settings in which these job-related activities occur include: Classroom setting, Video remote setting, Meetings, lectures, programs, ceremonies, and other WVU-related events, as assigned
Prepares for assignment content, subject matter, and vocabulary to provide accurate and effective services as a level appropriate to the University setting
Provides real-time captioning services for people in the WVU community who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, using computer software to record, edit, store, and provide meaning-for-meaning transcripts in a text-based format. Settings in which these job-related activities occur include: Classroom setting, Video remote setting, Meetings, lectures, programs, ceremonies, and other WVU-related events, as assigned, Post-production captioning of classroom media and custom media requests, as assigned
Prepares for assignment content, subject matter, and vocabulary to provide accurate and effective services as a level appropriate to the University setting; performs program application operations (e.g. entering specialized vocabulary into software)
Edits transcripts for accuracy of grammar, punctuation, and clarity of expression; uploads edited transcripts to student accommodation management software for viewing by students
Works with students and faculty to answer questions, discuss services, troubleshoot routine operational problems as they arise, and facilitate student access to various WVU programs; attends scheduled meetings, as assigned
Maintains professional records (such as calendars and time keeping records)
Seeks out continuing education opportunities, and attends relevant trainings and workshops, to maintain or improve interpreting and/or captioning skill level, to stay up to date on legislation regarding access for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, to increase cultural knowledge of deafness, to keep abreast of relevant technologies, and to maintain professional qualifications
Completes special projects or other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Auxiliary Aids and the Director of Disability Services

Required

Associate's degree.
A minimum of two (2) years interpreting experience, preferably in the post-secondary education arena.
All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Must be able to accurately type a minimum of 60 words per minute net (unaided) with a maximum of two errors.
Excellent listening, reading, and language compression skills.
Strong communication and grammar skills, verbally, manually, and in writing.
Awareness of cultural aspects of deafness and the cross-cultural communication.
Must adhere to established codes of ethics (such as the RID Code of Conduct and the ATSP Code of Conduct).
Ability to work professionally and respectfully in a remote setting.
Basic computer skills, including filing systems, internet browsers, Microsoft Office, eCampus/Blackboard; ability to identify and take corrective action to resolve routine operational problems with captioning equipment and to troubleshoot issues in real time with students.
Ability to work 3.75 hours per week as assigned; to adapt to changing schedules; and to accept itinerant schedules, including evening/night hours.
A selected candidate must demonstrate interpreting competency at a level appropriate for higher education, as determined through third-party evaluation.
If the state of West Virginia institutes an interpreter screening program or enters into a reciprocal agreement with an adjoining state, a candidate may, after hire, be required to achieve and continually maintain a specific level of state certification if they do not already hold National Interpreters Certification (NIC).
Must pass the TypeWell pre-screening test.
A selected candidate must complete TypeWell online training (12 to 16 weeks) to learn how to listen to lectures and discussions and quickly type a clear and accurate meaning-for-meaning transcript. At the conclusion of training, the candidate must pass the TypeWell Final Skill Check. Upon completion of the skill check, the candidate may begin work as a qualified TypeWell Transcriber.

Preferred

Bachelor's degree.
Successful completion of an Interpreter Training Program.
