Responsibilities
Perform drug analysis research tasks of significant technical complexity
Applying standard and established theories, concepts, and techniques associated with forensic drug analysis, but often using innovative approaches and/or complex statistical analyses
Develop or assist with the development of innovative and creative technical solutions to research problems, questions, and issues, using or extending state-of-the-art methods and technology
Track critical information on drug trends, enabling the DEA’s Diversion Control Division, Drug and Chemical Evaluation Section (DOE) to make informed drug policy and strategic decisions.
Interact with other Forensic Chemists to evaluate and identify new illicit substances.
Assist with developing, reviewing, and evaluating scientific data associated with drug analysis and assist in timely authoring detailed scientific reports and briefs that are organized, clear, and in the proper format.
Provide training and moderate scientific discussions, as necessary, and participate as a member of scientific working groups.
Participate in discussions and provide recommendations to other scientific teams based on expertise.
Use the DEA’s Data Query System (DQS) to research and respond to questions.
Support activities, functions, or duties as assigned.
Work with minimal supervision and guidance.

Required
A Ph.D. in Chemistry or equivalent.
Four (4) years of related work experience and an MS/MA degree are equivalent to a Ph.D. in a related discipline.
At least eight (8) years of work-related experience in the forensic chemistry field.
Must understand forensic chemistry laboratory processes, methods, instruments, and environment.
Must have expertise in forensic drug analysis and/or toxicology and have the ability to use this expertise to perform research, evaluate data, reach conclusions, and generate scientific reports.
Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Candidates must be US citizens and be able to pass a background check and security clearance.
