Responsibilities
Has overall supervision of properly laying up the ship and sees that all requisite lines (water/oil/fuel/sanitary) are either drained or duly weatherproofed as required.
Prepares vessel for winter maintenance work activity.
Handles ABS continuous survey.
Checks conveyor department to ensure its laid up properly.
Authorizes crew fares and transportation.
Issues requisitions for repair work prior to layup.
Coordinates anticipated work to be done at fit out.
Handles any end-of-season paperwork.
Oversees communication and instruction of how to operate, maintain, and repair ship's machinery being used during offseason work.
Has overall supervision of getting all machinery in order and ready for U.S. Coast Guard inspection.
Sees that all winter work was completed properly.
Checks outstanding and current requisitions.
Makes sure that CO2 or Halon system was serviced during the winter.
Prepares travel expenses for crew.
Inspects and supervises the preparation of unloading machinery for seasonal operations.
Has overall supervision for operation and maintenance and repair of all propulsion, auxiliary, unloading and deck machinery.
Maintains engine room logbook, notes times of entering and leaving ports, rivers, etc. as given by Master.
Maintains inventory and orders all supplies, parts, etc, either himself or through the purchasing department.
Monitors amount of fuel on board at all times.
Checks all payrolls, personnel forms, etc. before mailing to the office.
Responsible to see that engine room and quarters are kept clean.
Sees that assistant engineers operate and handle machinery properly.
Responsible for overall safety program for engine department.
Responsible for discipline of engine department.
Signs minutes of safety meeting and attends monthly meetings when possible.
Must comply with all applicable U.S. and Canadian Federal and/or State/Provincial laws and rules and regulations issued by the Coast Guard, U.S.P.H.S., A.B.S. etc.
Ensures all Oil Water Separator (OSW) documentation is maintained and up to date.

Required
This position requires a USCG license for Chief Engineer, Diesel, Unlimited Tonnage.
Position also requires a TWIC.
The employee must also possess a USCG Medical Certificate and be able to pass an annual Company physical examination and provide and proof of passing or participating in a USCG drug testing program at time of hire.
Familiarity with gravity-fed self-unloading/belt driven unloading systems, or prior experience with same.
Experience with Pielstick 4-stroke engines prime movers or similar powerplant experience.
Familiarity with IFO-180 bunkering and maintenance operations.
Familiarity with Exhaust Scrubber/Caustic Soda operations, including onloading and disposal from vessel to proper vendor apparatus.
Familiarity with CAT powerplants for generator power or similar powerplant experience.
Familiarity with Falk Reduction Gears or similar system experience.
Familiarity with Electronic Thruster and Winch Armatures.
Familiarity with fuel oil purification systems.
Employee must also travel to and from his or her assigned vessel located in various ports on the Great Lakes and to any assigned training facilities as required by ASC or the US Coast Guard.
Employee must attend the annual company meeting in late February/early March.
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
