Senior Financial Analyst & Accountant

The National Education Association (NEA) is seeking a Senior Financial Analyst & Accountant to support their strategic objective of promoting public education through high-level accounting and financial management services. Responsibilities

Consulting with NEA staff, state affiliates and associated NEA organizations on accounting, auditing, financial management and regulatory compliance matters
Provides technical expertise in analysis of financial statements, internal control design and implementation, best business practices design and implementation
Recommends cost-effective financial/business operations solutions
Develops strategies to improve overall fiscal accountability
Coordinate audit preparation activities
Conduct a full range of financial analyses and forecasting
Prepare financial statements
Plan and facilitate conferences and trainings
Create and present financial trainings to state and local leaders
Perform fiscal health reviews
Resolve any encountered problems
Conduct fiscal management training for end-users
Provide onsite technical assistance
Serve in lead role in reviewing and analyzing cash flow management
Provide expertise for system enhancements
Ensure timely regulatory filings, such as federal state and local tax filings, Department of Labor (DOL), and Federal Election Commission (FEC) reporting
Research emerging financial and accounting issues and make recommendations regarding their impact and implementation on NEA and/or its affiliates

Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills is obtained
Continuing education in Accounting or Finance or related discipline
Minimum of five years progressively responsible professional accounting and financial management experience
Experience must include full-range of accounting and financial responsibilities, such as general ledger, accounts payable, account analysis, bank reconciliation, cash flow management, forecasting and preparation of financial statements
Additional advanced experience and technical expertise with financial management systems, such as PeopleSoft, SAP, or Oracle
Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Account or Institute of Internal Audit designation with experience in auditing and tax preparation
Department of Labor and Federal election regulation compliance preferred
Demonstrated experience as a Controller or Financial Analyst adhering to General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Generally Accepted Auditing Standard (GAAS), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and federal, state, and local requirements
Proven skill in diversified accounting, financial management operations and complex problem resolution
Demonstrated experience in general ledger, financial statement, and audit preparation using advanced spreadsheet applications (preferably Excel)
Experience in business process design, benchmarking, regulatory and compliance issues and financial audits
Proven ability in investigating financial records, writing reports, and making presentations to senior management
Highly effective analytical, interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated flexibility and effectiveness in handling multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
Ability to work independently and collaboratively amongst individuals and groups at all levels of the organization (e.g., user and systems departments)
Required to engage in public speaking at conferences and trainings
Successful references

Preferred

Knowledge of nonprofit accounting and accounting and tracking of grants
Skill in developing financial training and presentations using applicable financial software
Demonstrated effective organizational and project management skills
Experience in interpreting and applying the rules and regulations related to completing the IRS Form 990 and 5500 and DOL Form LM2
