Responsibilities

You will join Cooking’s Web team – a team that owns Cooking’s web product

You will collaborate with Product, SEO, Design, and other engineers across The New York Times to enhance Cooking’s web user experience and improve our SEO while maintaining standards of performance and reliability

You will partner with leads to plan and estimate work. You enjoy collaborating with teammates and finding creative technical solutions, appreciating the balance between conviction and flexibility. You have your strengths but you enjoy new challenges

You will contribute to our design system and other aspects of Cooking’s engineering

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Qualification

Required

At least one year of experience building and maintaining modern web applications in a professional setting (internships acceptable)

At least one year of experience writing in at least one of our languages/frameworks (JavaScript (React, TypeScript, Next.js), Ruby (Rails), PostgreSQL, GraphQL)

Experience collaborating with cross-functional partners

Experience independently finding solutions and knowing when to seek assistance to make progress

Preferred

An understanding of SEO best practices and web performance

Experience troubleshooting systems using tools such as DataDog, Sentry or similar

Familiarity with AWS, GCP or other cloud provider products and services

Familiarity with Docker or similar containerization service
