Senior Aircraft Systems Safety Engineer

Garmin is seeking a full-time Senior Aircraft Systems Safety Engineer to oversee the aircraft system safety assessment process in Olathe, KS or Wichita, KS. The role involves generating and approving analyses for Garmin STC projects and collaborating with various engineering teams to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Responsibilities

Work with system safety analysts to establish the system safety approach and documentation necessary to show compliance for Garmin STC
Support the generation and UM approval of System Safety Assessment documentation in support of Garmin STC projects
Interface with Hardware, Software and EMC groups to ensure appropriate design assurance levels are considered
FAA approve Functional Hazard Analysis, qualitative analysis, FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis and particular risk/common cause analyses as required to certify the STC installations
Generate Functional Hazard Analysis, qualitative analysis, FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis and particular risk/common cause analyses as required to certify the STC installations for projects not assigned as a UM
FAA approve test plans and reports and other data supporting system safety assessment process
Work with engineers to generate and approve compliance statements for 23.1309 and other regulations that require system safety substantiation in support of Garmin STC projects
Provide guidance and mentoring to system safety engineers
Interface with ODA Administrators and FAA engineers as required

Required

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Computer Engineering AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Previous experience working in avionics design, installation and FAA certification
Must be detail-oriented and work proactively and effectively with some supervision support
Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a flexible, fast paced and challenging environment
Demonstrated knowledge of FAA regulations applicable to avionics and flight controls certification efforts
Demonstrated working knowledge of the FAA STC process
Demonstrated understanding of commercial avionics interface standards and their installation
Demonstrated clear understanding of the FAA system safety process
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrated advanced knowledge in one or more of the following technical areas: Electrical Systems, Structures, Mechanical Systems, System Safety, HIRF/Lightning, and/or Aircraft Certification

Preferred

Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
Currently hold ODA UM / FAA DER authority in electrical or mechanical systems with system safety authority or meet the minimum FAA experience requirements to obtain such delegation
Knowledge of FAA regulations applicable to avionics and flight controls certification efforts particularly those associated with system safety such as 23.1309
Thorough knowledge of AC 23/25.1309 and SAE ARPs 4761 and 4754
Thorough working knowledge of the FAA system safety process, including at least 3 years conducting aircraft level system safety analysis
Pilot's license
Familiar working as a Unit Member on a ODA
