The Structural Field Engineer will conduct inspections of various structural elements, collect and interpret field data, and collaborate with maintenance crews to ensure safety and reliability of transit assets.

Responsibilities
Perform daily field inspections of structural elements—bridges, retaining walls, culverts, platforms—documenting conditions per WMATA inspection protocols
Collect measurement and nondestructive test data (ultrasonic thickness, rebar cover, crack monitoring) and interpret results in situ
Prepare field inspection reports, photo logs, and preliminary condition assessments
Liaise with maintenance crews to coordinate temporary shoring, traffic control, and safe access during inspections
Recommend immediate remedial actions for critical defects and develop scopes for longer-term repairs
Input field data into WMATA’s asset-management and inspection databases
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's in Civil or Structural Engineering (or approved equivalent)
3+ years' field-inspection experience on heavy-civil or rail-infrastructure projects
Familiarity with nondestructive test methods and inspection equipment
Proficient with mobile reporting tools and Microsoft Office
Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and field-communication skills
