Structural Engineer – Building Design

The Structural Engineer – Building Design will play a key role in the planning, analysis, design, and detailing of new building structures and existing building renovations, focusing on transportation-related buildings.
Responsibilities
Develops, organizes, and implements structural planning, analysis, preliminary and final design document preparation for transportation related building structures
Supports and mentors junior team members in the development of design plans, technical oversight, specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, etc. Provides technical oversight and review of structural designs
Monitors of project budgets and schedules
Assists with proposals and presentations for rail/transit pursuits
Support building structural projects across VHB’s footprint
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering required
5-8 years of structural engineering experience required
Licensed PE (Professional Engineer) or ability to obtain within 6 months
Extensive knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures in structural engineering
Must possess strong technical skills with knowledge of various building structural systems and codes
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrates excellence in verbal presentations and technical writing
Team oriented with strong capability to work independently
Robust technical and critical thinking skills
Strong project management skills
Proactive and self-motivated, with excellent attention to detail and quality
Ability to lead and collaborate with a team of staff working remotely
Enthusiasm to learn, seek out opportunities, and take responsibility
Motivated to mentor junior staff
Strong organizational and time management skills
Proficiency in the use of structural engineering and BIM software such as 3D Finite Element, RISA 3D, STAAD.pro PCA Design Software, RAM Steel, Tekla, MathCAD, Revit, AutoCAD, and Microstation
Preferred
Master's degree preferred (may substitute for 1 year of experience)
Experience working on projects owned and operated by transit agencies such as WMATA, VRE, Amtrak, and/or other rail transit adjacencies preferred
DC, VA and MD station experience preferred
Familiarity with Design-Build and Design-Bid-Build project delivery
