Responsibilities
Provides education, prevention and intervention to ensure beach safety
Observes activities in assigned area from tower or on foot, in vehicles or from personal watercraft to detect hazardous conditions such as swimmers in distress, disturbances, or safety infractions
Cautions people against use of unsafe beach areas, prohibited activities, or illegal conduct
Rescues distressed persons from ocean or adjacent areas
Examines sick or injured individuals, administers first aid, and monitors vital signs. Administers appropriate care which may include CPR or other treatment until advanced medical personnel arrives on scene
Compiles emergency and medical treatment report forms and maintains daily information on weather and beach conditions
Enforces local ordinances and rules governing activities on the beach and in the water
Communicates with fellow SRTs to coordinate response to emergencies and rescues. Uses Semaphore and two-way radio system to maintain contact and coordinate activities between emergency rescue units
Operates vehicles and personal watercraft as needed
Qualification
Required
Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
Previous experience as a lifeguard desirable but not required
CPR & basic first aid certifications are provided during the paid Surf Rescue Academy
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to effectively speak and read English fluently to communicate with those seeking service and to issue intelligible warnings and directions to the public and fellow workers
Ability to understand and apply concepts such as percentages, area, distances, counting and addition
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
The employee is regularly required to walk, run and swim; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms
The employee frequently is required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
The employee is required to sit and climb or balance, must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and lift more than 100 pounds
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions and vibrations
The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock
A risk of radiation is possible due to prolonged exposure to the sun
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
