Responsibilities
Performs professional civil engineering work by assisting in the review of construction plans for any activity in the City's jurisdiction
Provides additional support by attending meetings interacting with internal and external customers to provide assistance as needed and consulting with other departments
Monitors code compliance by reviewing drawings and designs for compliance meeting and coordinates with other agencies; assisting with development of ordinances, standards and codes; researches new methods; enforces all local, state and federal requirements
Investigates and responds to questions or concerns; interprets City policies and regulations; types and sends technical correspondence; and performs other engineering duties and related work as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or closely related field
One to three years of related experience
Valid North Carolina driver's license and acceptable driving record
Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology
Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principles including the use of blueprints and drafts
Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in construction and repair of civil structures
Knowledge of civil land surveying
Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws
Knowledge of mathematics and their applications
Knowledge of relevant equipment use, policy, design and procedure to promote a safe and secure work environment
Knowledge of field work, drafting engineering design and inspections
Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify complex problems and develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
Skill in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions and approaches
Skill in judgment and decision making by considering relative costs and benefits of potential actions
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and drawings, specifications and maintain records and reports
Ability to use deductive reasoning, problem sensitivity and inductive reasoning to find general solutions and conclusions
Ability to speak clearly and precisely using effective English language skills
Ability to communicate orally with customers and the public using a telephone or in one-to-one or group settings
Ability to lead and communicate with coworkers effectively
Ability to perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others
Ability to choose the right mathematical methods or formulas to solve a problem
Ability to read, write, and understand information and ideas in an effective manner
Ability to produce written documents and reports with clearly organized thoughts
Ability to work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public
Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
Ability to meet the mental and physical demands of the job
