Responsibilities
Performs all required procedures related to counting and identification of blood cells, coagulation studies and other specialized hematologic procedures (e.g. microscopic morphology, bleeding and clotting time.)
Receives blood specimens sent to laboratory or draws blood from patient by venipuncture, observing strict principles for asepsis and antisepsis to prevent infection of patient and contamination of specimen
Using microscope, studies morphology of red cells in terms of proportions of cells in various stages of development and other characteristics of red corpuscles which may be related to disease processes
Maintains blood cell analyzer, staining units dilutors, and coagulation instruments. (e.g. cleaning and preventative maintenance.)
Processes specimens by drawing blood, analyzing, reporting and entering in the computer
Maintains Quality Control Log manually and in the computer
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards
Centrifuges blood specimens in test tubes and capillary tubes to separate cells and sediment from blood serum. Prepares solutions and reagents used in blood tests
Verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the proper patient and for the indicated procedure
Analyzes blood and morphology accurately and in a timely man
Performs stains and examines blood when necessary accurately and in a timely manner
Reports difficult analyses or abnormal findings promptly to Hematologist
Performs appropriate tests (temperature, speed, timer etc.) on all equipment, reagents, and cells according to schedule set by department
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Laboratory Science, or Associates degree plus two years of laboratory experience
IV Certification
Knowledge of patient care and patient problems relating to blood testing
Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position
