Welcome pitches that tackle important, timely topics in ways that will register with a national audience invested in reading unbiased reporting
Seek stories that can make local issues feel compelling to a national audience
Value original reporting that can take a national or local issue and make it matter
Produce standard features requiring at least three sources interviewed and original reporting; typically 800-1,000 words
Create deep dives requiring more than three sources interviewed, analysis, and data; typically 1,200 to 1,500 words
Develop longform enterprise stories requiring at least five sources interviewed, intense analysis, and investigative skills; may exceed 2,000 words
Qualification
Required
Ability to pitch compelling stories that tackle important, timely topics
Experience in original reporting
Ability to conduct interviews with multiple sources
Ability to analyze data and public records
Strong writing skills for various story lengths (800-2,000 words)
Ability to make local issues relevant to a national audience
