Shop Assistant

The Shop Assistant role involves supporting the maintenance shop by assisting mechanics, maintaining cleanliness, and organizing the shop and equipment. This position requires adherence to safety standards and may involve operating various types of equipment after sufficient training.

Responsibilities

Assists shop mechanics with daily tasks as required
Cleans and maintains maintenance facilities and areas according to established company standards
Washes and details company equipment
Helps organize both the shop and shop yard on a regular basis
After sufficient training and certification, may operate a fork-lift around the shop and shop yard
Operates company motor vehicles and construction equipment, including high-lift trucks such as forklifts, backhoes, front-end loaders, skid loaders or skid-steer loaders
Operates handheld power tools
Observes and practices safety standards and policies of the department and adheres to safety standards established by the company
Meets the obligations under the Workplace Health and Safety Act and the Environmental Protection Act
Other duties as assigned

Required

High School Diploma or GED
Some experience in a shop environment
Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Valid driver's license with a good driving record
Ability to operate hand tools under guidance and supervision
Ability to secure equipment and product, loading and unloading product and cleaning the truck box as directed
Ability to problem solve
Ability to work according to seasonal and order demand schedule
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 55 pounds
Reliable attendance required
Abides by Company Safety Program and Policies while performing duties safely
Meets the obligations under the Workplace Health and Safety Act and the Environmental Protection Act

Preferred

Certification in related program from technical school
