Responsibilities

Performs all general clerical duties required by the specific nursing unit as well as maintaining the medical records in compliance with hospital policy
The secretary is responsible for maintaining an effective flow of communication, internal and external, to the nursing unit
The secretary assists the charge nurse in maintaining the budget for the unit’s supply and expense line by carefully monitoring the use of supplies on the nursing units and ordering judiciously
Performs typing as needed within the SNF
Is under the supervision of the Director of Nursing of the skilled nursing facility
Assists clinical staff to comply with the admission standard: Initiates patient chart per protocol. Completes census recording
Demonstrates knowledge of responsibilities and carries them out effectively: Assembles and maintains patient records, facilitating provision and maintenance of a complete and current record. Maintains statistics as described/delegated by Director of Nursing. Ensures pre-op charts are transported with Patient to Surgical Services/Procedures
Order Unit’s Medical Supplies from UHC Central Distribution and stocks the supplies thru out the Unit as needed and maintains the remaining supplies in the Units Clean Utility and Equipment Rooms
Maintain a clean working environment at Units Nurses Station. To include but not limited to a weekly cleaning of the desk counter areas
Assist Certified Nursing Assistants with Patient Meal/Tray passes during the shift
Demonstrates ability to communicate with physicians, departments, hospitals, the entire health care team; patients and families to receive and relay appropriate information in a timely, accurate and professional fashion
Functions as a receptionist for patients/families/MDs and UTCC visitors by greeting and responding to requests
Functions as a liaison between patient/family and health care team by relaying information completely and accurately
Demonstrates prioritization skills
Relays critical information within established guidelines
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate to the infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric patient per the established age-specific education/ standard
Completes computer skills checklist
Demonstrates ability to continuously perform computer skills
Demonstrates proper use of telephone for answering, transferring calls or placing the caller on hold
Must have the ability to perform concentrated and complex mental activity
Must have the ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions with frequent interruptions, and must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis
Must have the ability to make sound judgments and also be able to collaborate with other multi-disciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion
Must have the ability to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures
Must have strong communication skills, written and verbal
Must have basic math skills
Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and all shifts
Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping are necessary body movements utilized in performing nursing duties throughout the work shift
Must be able to read and write legibly in English
Must be able to perform medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects
Exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps, and explosive gases
Exposure to high stress and constant interruptions
Exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants

Required

High school graduate or equivalent

Preferred

Completion of a nurse's aid training and competency program and have passed a required competency test approved by the WV State Health Department. (Per Federal Long Term Care Regulation)
Medical Terminology course
Previous clerical or secretarial position with the two years of typing preferred
Previous experience with EPIC software
