Responsibilities
Work on development of utility vehicles and premium turf product designed, tested, and produced in Horicon, WI
Lead the design and development of EMS hardware and software for small internal combustion engines (1–4 cylinders), ensuring systems meet performance, reliability, and compliance standards
Act as a subject matter expert for EMS-related components, including sensors, actuators, and control modules. You’ll provide guidance on diagnostics, troubleshooting, and system optimization
Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and field support—to ensure seamless integration of EMS into vehicle platforms throughout the product lifecycle. This will include leading team members as a matrix manager
Work closely with suppliers to define technical requirements, track deliverables, and ensure timely completion of EMS-related milestones. Drive alignment towards common communication architecture, diagnostic methods, and service programming/support needs. Be a technical liaison between Deere project teams and EMS suppliers
Translate system-level requirements into detailed specifications for EMS hardware and software, ensuring alignment with business goals and technical constraints
Support validation and testing efforts by working hands-on with vehicles, engines, and instrumentation to gather data, perform root cause analysis, and verify system performance
Engage with internal and external stakeholders to align key product features, customer needs, and technical trade-offs, contributing to the delivery of innovative and customer-focused solutions
Qualification
Required
5 or more years of experience in EMS design, integration, and diagnostics for small spark-ignited and diesel engines
5 or more years of experience in electronic hardware design, including microcontrollers, analog/digital circuits, and electronics manufacturing and verification
3 or more years of experience working with J1939 CAN or NMEA 2000 communication protocols, including diagnostics and use of network analysis tools
Strong understanding of internal combustion engine operation, emissions control systems, and calibration processes
Demonstrated hands-on experience with sensors (temperature, pressure, position) and actuators (solenoids, injectors, ignition systems)
Familiarity with EMC standards and best practices for designing electronics that meet regulatory and performance requirements
Proven ability to work independently in both office and field environments, with strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Excellent communication and leadership skills, with experience presenting technical information and leading cross-functional initiatives
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
Preferred
Experience developing vehicle electrical systems in industries such as agriculture, turf, recreational vehicles (strongly preferred), automotive, or construction
Familiarity with functional safety standards such as ISO 26262 and ISO 25119, including the ability to apply safety principles and processes
Familiarity with diagnostic protocols such as J1939 DMA, UDS, OBD/OBDII
Experience with embedded software development, especially in Agile environments
Background in project management, including planning, tracking, and delivering technical milestones
