The Senior Software Engineer (Bioinformatics) will develop and optimize software systems for forensic DNA analysis, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to create high-performance tools that aid law enforcement in solving complex cases.

Responsibilities

Build innovative and performant analysis tools to analyze forensic genomic data

Develop new techniques for extracting useful information from DNA, enabling law enforcement to solve challenging cases

Design, implement and integrate cloud-based systems to handle large-scale data processing

Develop plans for, and perform validation of new algorithms, tools, and systems

Optimize applications and automate workflows supporting the world’s largest forensic DNA database

Work with other developers to integrate novel analysis into Othram’s systems and products

Use automation and workflow management tools to scale up analysis

Automate workflows to efficiently process and analyze DNA evidence

Develop advanced algorithms to analyze and interpret digitized DNA data, including traits and genealogical connections

Enhance forensic capabilities by improving identification accuracy and automating complex analysis

Work closely with forensic scientists, data scientists, and system programmers to integrate complex functionalities

Continuously enhance efficiency by automating data processing pipelines and reducing manual intervention

Required

Scientific fluency, with a strong foundation in statistics, bioinformatics, or population genetics

Strong foundation in C++, Rust, or another low-level language

Demonstrable experience with bioinformatics analysis workflows, especially NGS (Next Generation Sequencing)

Passion for interdisciplinary work at the intersection of biology and computer science

Self-starter mentality with the ability to solve problems independently and innovate

Exposure to scalable systems and automation frameworks

Clear written and verbal technical communication skills

Preferred

Proven ability to design, build, and deliver complex, large-scale projects

Experience with NGS analysis tools- samtools, vcftools, variant callers, VCF and BAM file formats

Knowledge of common bioinformatics pipeline tools, like Nextflow, Cromwell, or other scientific workflow systems

Track record of driving projects to completion in dynamic environments

Active involvement in solving technical challenges

Experience working across technical and scientific teams

Proficiency with bioinformatics tools like SAMtools or GATK, and experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)

Knowledge of multiple programming languages with a strong technical foundation
