CNC Maintenance Technician 2/3 (Engineered Systems Tec 2/3)
Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a qualified Maintenance Technician to support their national security mission. The role involves providing machine system life cycle support, including preventative and corrective maintenance for complex machine tools, and may require deeper technical knowledge and hands-on experience in CNC machinery for higher-level positions.
Responsibilities
Use your maintenance skills to support our national security mission! Prototype Fabrication (PF) is seeking a qualified Maintenance Technician to join the division's Integrated Logistics & Asset Management (PF-ILAM) team
As a member of the PF-ILAM Maintenance team, you will provide machine system life cycle support including the preventative maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) for complex machine tools located within eight manufacturing facilities that are critical in support of the laboratory's mission and core weapons and scientific programs
The technician will also perform new machine installations, upgrades and retrofits, as well as maintaining advanced technology for on-machine measurements of cutting tools and part geometry
Take your technical expertise to the next level-and make an impact where it matters
Building on the responsibilities of the Tec 2 role, the Engineered Systems Technician 3 position requires deeper technical knowledge and hands-on experience, particularly in maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery and high-precision manufacturing systems
At this level, you will serve as a subject matter expert in CNC system maintenance, including multi-axis machining centers, mill-turns, and other advanced manufacturing platforms
You'll lead complex troubleshooting efforts, contribute to root cause analyses, and collaborate with engineering and operations teams to improve equipment uptime and performance
You will also support the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as on-machine tool and part measurement systems, mission critical maintenance, and advanced diagnostics
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Knowledge
We are open to candidates with either a mechanical or electrical background. However, the successful candidate must be willing and able to work across both disciplines. While expertise in one area is expected, a willingness to learn and perform tasks in the other is essential
Experience performing both preventive and corrective maintenance on complex mechanical and/or electromechanical equipment
Skilled in troubleshooting, repair, and installation of CNC machine tools or similar industrial machinery, including components such as ballscrews, linear rails, gearboxes, motors, servos, and various hydraulic or pneumatic systems
Skilled in diagnosing and repairing control and electrical systems, including PLCs, servo drives, CNC controls, low- and high-voltage systems, and a variety of sensors
Ability to read and interpret ladder logic diagrams, electrical schematics, and mechanical drawings
Customer Support & Team Dynamics
Ability to work independently as well as demonstrated experience working in a team environment with the ability to leverage ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence to support multiple, ongoing team tasks amidst programmatic priorities
Demonstrated experience with time management, organizational skills and effective verbal and written communication
Record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to the long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of an organization
Training/Certifications:
You must have the ability to acquire and maintain pertinent certifications, such as Radiological Worker II, Beryllium Worker, forklift operator and crane operator. The employer will support the selected candidate through these training and certification programs
Additional Job Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level (Level 3) also requires the following:
Working knowledge and experience with preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on a variety of manual and CNC lathes, mills and other 480V industrial machine tools. You will assist senior technicians to perform moderately complex installations, maintenance, and repairs on equipment and subsystems
Working experience supporting the maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems. You will apply your knowledge and skills in the operation of diagnostic equipment and measuring devices to assist senior technicians in developing and executing solutions to more complex technical issues and independently develop solutions to routine technical problems of moderate scope and complexity. You will maintain documentation for installations and/or repairs using established databases
