Intern - Habitat (Summer)

The State of South Dakota is offering a summer internship position for a Habitat Intern with the Department of Game, Fish & Parks. The intern will work alongside Conservation Technicians and Resource Biologists to learn about wildlife habitat management, including grassland management techniques and the development of a habitat management plan.

Government

Responsibilities

Work alongside Conservation Technicians, Foreman and Resource Biologists
Learn and be engaged in projects to develop, maintain and improve wildlife habitat including a public use aspect
Job shadow and work one on one with biologists
Learn different grassland management techniques
Identify important native plant species as well as noxious weeds
Understand the tree planting process and various wildlife food plot types
Learn grassland reconstruction techniques and numerous other land management information
Collect information in a work portfolio
Develop their own habitat management plan for a Game Production Area
Participate in an open group discussion or presentation of their management plan prior to completing employment

Qualification

Required

APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply
By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program

Preferred

Preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior
Preference may be given to South Dakota residents
Preference may be given to students of South Dakota institutions
