Environmental Program Support Specialist
The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is offering an internship opportunity with the U.S. Army Environmental Command, aimed at high school students. The role involves hands-on experience in environmental conservation and compliance projects, including wildlife surveys and laboratory analysis, while also providing training in safe handling of wildlife and domestic animals.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Assisting with a wide array of projects pertaining to government environmental programs, such as wildlife relocation, wildlife surveys, domestic animal control and care, forestry projects, cultural resource projects, compliance projects, wastewater treatment plant data collection, data management, lab analysis, report writing and document preparation, and inspections for various projects
Conducting field work during in-house surveys
Capturing and transporting stray dogs and cats to the Fort Huachuca kennel, checking for microchips, assisting with adoptions/fosters, cleaning kennels, feeding animals, and providing exercise for animals
Water sampling, analysis and interpretation
Draft generation of maintenance requests for buildings, survey data forms, domestic animal intake forms, historic property inventory forms, site forms, draft minor plans and review of memos and other outgoing correspondence
Participating in public outreach opportunities such as public/school tours and presentations, preparing exhibits, etc
Qualification
Required
Applicants must be in or have completed high school
Post-high school graduates must be in an Associates-level program in Environmental Science, Biology, Animal Science, Geology, Chemistry, Physics, or other Physical Science, and have maintained at least a 2.0 GPA
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens and must be able to pass a basic background investigation
Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
Proficiency in writing and basic editing skills
Ability to conduct fieldwork in harsh desert conditions (high summer heat or windy winter cold), with little to no cover for extended periods of time (5-7 hours a day, for as long as 30 consecutive business days. No camping required.)
A strong sense of initiative and the ability to prioritize and self-direct from a list of tasks
A positive, diplomatic attitude and the ability to work collaboratively with others
Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
Degree: High School Diploma/GED received within the last 36 months or currently pursuing
Minimum Overall GPA: 2.00
Preferred
Experience with ArcGIS software (preferred but not required)
Experience working with Trimble GPS units (preferred but not required)
