ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I (GIS- GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS)
The City of Torrance is seeking an Engineering Technician I (GIS) to join their Community Development team. This entry-level position involves maintaining and supporting the City’s geographic information systems (GIS), performing routine technical duties such as data creation, maintenance, and generating standard GIS products like maps.

Responsibilities
Perform variety of routine technical duties in maintaining and supporting City and departmental geographic information systems (GIS) and GIS databases
Use standard GIS tools and generate standard GIS products
Perform duties primarily focused on GIS data creation and maintenance to support departmental and City-Wide geographic information systems capabilities
Utilize standard GIS tools and utilities to enter and correct data in GIS databases
Research a variety of source documents to verify data accuracy and completeness
Generate standard GIS products including maps
Carry out assignments ranging from basic to routine following specific and detailed instructions as to methods, procedures and guidelines
Qualification
Required
Equivalent to graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry
One to two years of experience in civil engineering or related drafting work, surveying work or customer service/permitting work
Must possess and maintain an appropriate, valid driver's license
Preferred
Vocational training in drafting or computer-aided design and drafting is desired
Experience with ArcGIS desktop or ArcGIS Pro
Working knowledge of basic principles, practices and techniques of GIS applications, cartographic principles, and design and database management gained from formal training and/or work experience
Demonstrated skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail
Ability to organize and maintain efficient files and records
Strong working knowledge of computer systems and digital technologies
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and demanding environment
A high degree of initiative and resourcefulness
Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills
Ability to effectively handle multiple projects and constantly shifting priorities
Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS and ArcGIS Pro is highly desirable
