Intern - Fisheries Management (Summer)
The State of South Dakota is looking for a Fisheries Management Intern for the summer session. The role involves conducting Aquatic Invasive Species sampling, assisting with fish population surveys, and performing laboratory work among other responsibilities.

Responsibilities
Conducting Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) sampling and/or education efforts within the northeast fish management area
Assisting with fish population surveys and ongoing research projects
Conducting independent research if interested
Field work, such as netting, electrofishing, and AIS watercraft inspection/decontamination
Using tablets and computers for data entry and performing laboratory work, which involves removing fish aging structures and estimating fish ages
Completing maintenance tasks related to vehicles, equipment, buildings, and grounds to ensure the smooth operation of work activities
Communicating effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public
Willingness to work nights, weekends, and having a valid driver’s license
Completing a research proposal with the assistance of a full-time staff member before any data collection efforts
Publishing findings is encouraged
Qualification
Required
APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply
By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program
Interns will work independently and must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers and the public
Successful applicants must be willing to work nights, weekends, and have a valid driver's license
Preferred
Preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior
Preference may be given to South Dakota residents
Preference may be given to students of South Dakota institutions
Pursuit of a career in fisheries and wildlife or biological sciences is desirable
