Responsibilities

Performs ultrasound exams (including on portable equipment) of abdomen, (including liver, GB, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, pelvis, major vessels, small parts (including breast, thyroid, testicular, popliteal, pyloric stenosis and appendicitis studies) and neonatal brains
Performs doppler studies of the carotids, abdomen, pelvis, small parts and peripheral vascular
Performs intra-cavity ultrasound studies (endovaginal and endorectal)
Performs localizations for invasive procedures under ultrasound guidance
Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing treatment and use of equipment to minimize hazards of electric shock, burns and extraneous radiation to patients
Assists in training of students and ancillary personnel
Tracks patients and appropriately uses IDX (RIS) and PACS
As required, transports patients to and from the Ultrasound Suite
Schedules patients for sonography and arranges for patients to be prepped
Instructs and provides clinical supervision to ultrasound students and Radiology residents in specific area of expertise
Gives verbal preliminary reports of sonogram results to M.D
Assessment, treatment and patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards
Checks the requisition for an ultrasound examination to confirm procedure requested patient's condition and check special notes or comments
Verifies patient identity by checking wristband with requisition form
Explains procedure to be performed clearly to patient and answers any patient questions
Individualizes examinations relative to clinical history of each patient
Provides protection to patients in accordance with prescribed radiation safety standards and Departmental policies
Demonstrates ability to perform and obtain high quality ultrasound images
Demonstrates competence in darkroom chemistry and processing procedures as needed; evaluates sonogram for technical quality before delivering to physician
Documentation in patient record is accurate, timely, and according to departmental policies and procedures; reports are prepared timely and accurately
Interacts professionally with patients and families

Required

Graduation from an approved formal training program in ultra-sound technology required
RDMS required (must be obtained within one year of hire)
Current BCLS Certificate required (either American Red Cross or American Heart Association). New employees will be required to produce a current BCLS certificate within 6 months from date of hire

Preferred

Bachelor of Science Degree preferred
1-2 years of previous ultrasound experience preferred
Familiarity with diagnostic x-rays
Good oral communication skills
Good interpersonal skills
Speaks, reads, and writes English to the extent required by the position
