Clinical Laboratory Scientist - Microbiology

Responsibilities
Monitors Instrumentation for AST and ID. Performs QC
Responsible for preventive maintenance of instrument(s), sterility studies
Set up identification and susceptibility on microorganisms
Perform PCR molecular testing as described in lab procedure
Release microbiology results on a timely manner (TAT)
Read and release results of non-culture kit tests as described in lab procedure
Performs all tests in micro lab and provides help to assigned duties from Micro Lab Supervisor
Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results
Follows procedures for handling potentially infectious materials
Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples
Maintains records of Proficiency Testing, evaluations and corrective actions
Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedure calibrations and maintenance
Follows the laboratory’s quality control policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established performance specifications
Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results
Documents all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications
Performs all routine and new test procedures that are complex and require professional judgment when assigned to a specific area
Demonstrates knowledge of theory behind the test performed
Performs equipment preventive and corrective maintenance
Performs validation, correlations, and other technical methods to document instrument accuracy and precision
Reviews, corrects, follow up patient reports by sending corrected results and subsequently notifying all involved
Assists the Microbiology Supervisor in maintaining adequate supplies and inventory levels
Demonstrates the ability to prioritize work duties
Recognizes the administrative changes in staffing and scheduling and adapt to these changes
Assumes the day to day duties of the Laboratory Manager and Microbiology Supervisor when required
Assists in performing quality control standards to assure accuracy of test results
Assists and notifies the Supervisor in reviewing and solving quality control problems
Responsible for running the Auto-Verification program
Confirms testing on all Critical Values to ensure accuracy prior to releasing of test results
Assists in training and orienting new employees
Assists in handling clerical work as necessary
Responsible for ensuring that Tests are completed on a timely basis (TAT)
Qualification
Required
Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences or related
Must meet CLIA requirement for Microbiology testing personnel in high complex lab
Certification from ASCP, AMT or equivalent
