Communication and Organizing Specialist
AFSCME is seeking a Communication and Organizing Specialist to lead the Association's member communications program and drive campaigns to recruit new members. The role involves creating and implementing work plans for communications and member mobilization, collaborating with various stakeholders to strengthen organizing strategies.

Responsibilities
Creates and implements the digital strategy for the Retirees Association including email, social media, and peer-to-peer and SMS texting, and website content
Leads retiree mobilization and engagement on political and legislative campaigns on the state and local levels in conjunction with DC 37 and AFSCME’s political action teams
Assists with the development of the Association’s digital program to recruit members to contribute to the union’s political action fund, PEOPLE, which supports pro-retiree, pro-worker candidates
Regularly update the Association’s website and its social media channels and performs regular quality assurance of website to identify broken links and outdated content
Manages the Association’s Facebook page and other social media accounts including writing, developing, and posting content
Updates and maintains tracking databases and produces reports of metrics on performance of both direct-mail and digital programs and projects
Participates in the development of retiree organizing and PEOPLE campaign plans and strategies with a focus on both in-person activities as well as digital promotion and follow-up
Collaborates with the Association’s staff and volunteers
Develops other Association materials including the Association’s quarterly article in DC 37’s PEP newsletter, brochures, leaflets, presentations, direct-mail pieces, booklets, video scripts and other media
Organizes and maintains electronic files of communications materials
Assists in the coordination and preparation of the monthly Executive Board and Membership meeting reports
Assists with the planning of meetings with retirees throughout the greater New York City area and potentially in areas with membership density like Florida and North Carolina, including scheduling speakers, public speaking and conducting trainings and workshops
Assists with maintaining and updating the Association’s membership data including collecting and entering membership contact information as needed
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Graduation from a 4-year college is desirable and up to 3 years of experience in union, political or community organizing; or any combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge and interest in the labor movement, politics, progressive change, and/or seniors/retirees desirable
Strong ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
Knowledge of mobilization strategies and tactics
Ability to effectively use social media tools to communicate with target groups
Basic knowledge of graphic design, UnionHall or other web CMS systems and VAN platforms desirable
Knowledge and experience with digital forms of communications, including email, websites, texting and social media
Experience with email marketing systems like Action Network
Valid driver's license required
Ability to plan and run meetings and actions
Preferred
Bilingual skills desirable
