Ecology & Conservation Director

The Summit Bechtel Reserve is a large outdoor adventure and education facility located near New River Gorge National Park. They are seeking an Ecology & Conservation Director to provide leadership and management for various ecology and conservation programs, instruct Scouts in merit badges, and ensure safe and engaging experiences during summer camp.

Recreational Facilities & Services

Responsibilities

Provide leadership/management to the Ecology and Conservation, Sustainability, and Fish Camp areas
Provide formal and informal feedback to staff, coordinate program logistics, collect program/instructional materials
Instruct, mentor, and engage Scouts (ages 11-17) in ecology/conservation merit badges
Present to groups of 5-20 Scouts (youth) to transfer knowledge and empower application of skills and concepts
Enter or turn in accurate advancement paperwork in a timely manner
Participate in camp-wide programs and activities (campfires, evening programs)
Manage or assist with the setup, maintenance, and takedown of program and camping areas
Model the Scout Oath and Law in daily interactions
Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area
Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership
Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook

Required

Minimum age: 18+
Leave No Trace Level II certification required (training provided)
Able to obtain National Camping School Ecology/Conservation certification (training provided)
Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (includes background screening)
Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication
Ability to stand, walk, and hike, up to 8 hours daily and ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds
Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record, including height/weight guidelines

Preferred

Previous environmental science, biology, ecology, conservation, and/or outdoor education
Previous leadership experience and/or Scouting/Summit experience
