Geotechnical Project Engineer
SMEUSA is seeking a Geotechnical Project Engineer in their Grand Rapids office, focused on developing practical solutions as a premier consultant. The role involves managing geotechnical projects, conducting analyses, and maintaining client relationships while collaborating with engineering teams.
Consulting
Responsibilities
Project site visits to set up new projects, occasionally observe specialized in-situ testing, and learn SME’s testing activities in support of complex geotechnical processes including ground improvement, deep foundation installation, and other specialty geotechnical structure support options
Performing geotechnical engineering analyses and services, and preparing memos, letters, and reports that provide technical recommendations related to geotechnical projects
Serving as a project manager for multiple concurrent geotechnical projects
Working closely with our geotechnical engineering teams in the other offices. Occasional travel to these offices to collaborate on geotechnical engineering projects and receive technical mentoring is expected
Develop and plan geotechnical engineering scope of services, prepare proposals, and negotiate professional service fees and contracts
Maintaining a high level of technical quality and content in the products and services delivered by you and those you mentor within our Geotechnical engineering group
Identifying and securing clients and business/project opportunities both independently and in support of other local, regional and corporate business development activities
Developing and maintaining client and project relationships over time that will expand your network and help SME expand our geotechnical analysis, and design and construction services. We expect you will be able to do this by solving your clients’ most difficult challenges and critical issues by developing and implementing creative technical answers and solutions, building lasting personal/professional relationships, and realizing your value to serve clients in the construction community
Learning about other SME services to assist in promoting and expanding geotechnical and other SME services to new and existing clients
Actively participate in professional organizations to enhance your career and the engineering profession, and to increase visibility and project opportunities for SME
Other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related field
Experience in geotechnical engineering analyses and services
Ability to prepare technical memos, letters, and reports
Project management experience for multiple concurrent geotechnical projects
Willingness to travel occasionally to collaborate with other offices
Experience in developing and planning geotechnical engineering scope of services
Ability to prepare proposals and negotiate professional service fees and contracts
Strong technical quality and content in deliverables
Experience in identifying and securing clients and business/project opportunities
Ability to develop and maintain client and project relationships
Participation in professional organizations
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
