Staff Attorney (Multiple Positions Available)
New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) is a leading civil legal services organization combating economic, racial, and social injustice. They are seeking Staff Attorneys for their Tenants’ Rights Unit to defend tenants facing eviction and to ensure that low-income New Yorkers have the right to legal representation in Housing Court.

Responsibilities
Handle a full caseload of full representation non-payment and holdover proceedings in Housing Court, which involves extensive communication with clients, intense negotiations with opposing counsel, frequent motion practice, discovery and depositions, and significant advocacy with outside agencies on behalf of clients
Handle litigation before administrative agencies as necessary, including DHCR matters, administrative housing discrimination proceedings before the NYC Commission on Human Rights, and proceedings where clients’ Section 8 vouchers are being terminated
Participate in court-based and phone intake and client and community outreach initiatives
Qualification
Required
Admission to New York Bar, passage of a recent NY Bar Exam, or equivalent bar passage in a UBE jurisdiction. July 2025 bar exam takers will also be considered
Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and social justice
Excellent legal research and writing skills
Preferred
Litigation experience, including experience gained in law school clinics, internships, and externships
Fluency in another language prevalent in New York City, such as Spanish, Russian, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, or Bengali
At least one year of experience representing tenants in NYC Housing Court
