Responsibilities
Loading and Unloading Materials: Helpers often move lumber and related products, loading them onto delivery trucks or customer vehicles and unloading incoming shipments. This task requires strength, attention to safety, and the ability to follow instructions precisely
Organizing and Stacking Lumber: Proper organization of materials is crucial for efficiency and safety. Helpers stack and arrange lumber according to size, type, and order priority, maintaining clear aisles and minimizing the risk of accidents
Assisting Customers: A key part of the job involves responding to customer inquiries, helping them locate products, and sometimes providing basic product information or recommendations. Excellent customer service skills are beneficial in these interactions
Maintaining Cleanliness and Safety: Lumber yards can be hazardous environments if not properly maintained. Helpers are responsible for sweeping debris, cleaning work areas, and identifying and reporting safety hazards or damaged goods
Inventory Control: Keeping track of stock levels, labeling products, and updating inventory records are often part of the job. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential to ensure that orders are fulfilled correctly
Operating Equipment: Depending on training and company policy, lumber yard helpers may operate forklifts, pallet jacks, saws, or other machinery. Safe operation of equipment is paramount, and proper training is required
Supporting Delivery Operations: Helpers may assist delivery drivers by loading trucks, securing loads, and sometimes accompanying drivers on deliveries to help unload products at customer sites
