Sign Language Interpreter
Jefferson City School District is seeking a Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate communication for deaf and hard of hearing students. The role involves interpreting educational content, supporting social interactions, and advocating for student needs as outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

Responsibilities
Interpret or transliterate in a mode that reflects the student’s language use, as outlined in the IEP
Model social strategies to encourage interaction between deaf and hearing individuals
Support incidental learning and ensure incidental information is interpreted
Work with the classroom teacher to adapt classroom/school activities to promote participation
Position themselves appropriately to assure visual access to educational content
Demonstrate effectiveness as a team member including interpersonal communication skills
Ability to advocate for the needs of the student, as outlined in the IEP, in all school settings
Assist and/or lead in providing in-services to hearing students, staff and parents as requested in regard to sign language, the role of the interpreter, etc
Working with teachers/staff toward the goal of increasing interaction between deaf or hard of hearing students and their peers
Providing academic support, such as tutoring the deaf student, as outlined in the IEP and under the guidance of a certified teacher
Providing sign language support to classmates of the student who is deaf or hard of hearing
Provide interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities and parent meetings when requested in advance
Other district wide interpreting needs as they arise, if student is not present
Team collaboration and professional development with other district sign language interpreters, as necessary
Qualification
Required
Must possess any one of the following acceptable Interpreter certifications: National certifications: CI/CT, or NIC; State certifications: MICS, MICS RCED, PCED, or MO-BEI; EIPA: Score of 4.0 or higher preferred
Must have a Missouri interpreting license in addition to certification
Fluency in written and spoken English
Fluency in various forms of communication including SEE, PSE, ASL, or the sign mode determined by the educational team
Ability to both produce accessible signed language and understand the deaf child's signs
An understanding of the stages of child development particularly as these relate to language development and acquisition
Knowledge specific to academic content and language development of deaf and hard of hearing children
An ability to communicate and adapt, as a member of the educational team, on matters regarding interpreting, communication and sign language development
Flexibility to address the need for sign language interpreters in the district, as the needs arise
Preferred
EIPA: Score of 4.0 or higher preferred
Bachelor's degree preferred
