Responsibilities

Plan and facilitate impactful class sessions, focused on supporting first-year students with academic reading and writing, critical inquiry, media literacy, creative process, and exploration of academic identity
Assist students with topics and assignments drawn from current course work in their associated General Education courses, especially writing-intensive courses
Lead a structured-yet-flexible class time, combining effective use of whole class, small group, one-on-one, and individual activities
Solicit student input (with careful attention to student needs, identities, interests, major areas, etc.) to make informed curricular and pedagogical decisions
Craft a responsive, differentiated approach based on the needs of individual students and the group as a whole
Build community, and make sure that all students feel welcome in the classroom and have the support and resources they need to thrive academically
Engage in regular team meetings to review curriculum, reflect on teaching practices and data, and plan impactful student supports
Coordinate with partners and teams to connect students with resources and to share information that will better inform work in the program and at the university
Approach work with embedded academic support team members using a 'conspire and align' approach (rather than a hierarchical command model)
Regularly confer with the embedded support and promote classroom conditions that enable the embedded support to do their work effectively
Ensure that all course-related documentation (attendance, grades, progress reports, data collection, etc.) is completed accurately and on time
Utilize technology-based teaching platforms and university data systems

Required

Masters degree or higher AND at least one of the following: 18 graduate-level credit hours in English, Composition, Creative Writing, Communications, Literature, Rhetoric, Reading, Language and Literacy, Humanities, or a closely related field OR Track record of teaching appointments and demonstrated skill in teaching academic reading, writing, and research at the secondary level or higher OR Track record of appointments and demonstrated skill at providing academic support for reading, writing, and research at the higher education level
Experience with digital tools for teaching, teaching in either online or blended/hybrid format
Passionate about working with a highly diverse student body
Excellent facilitation and classroom management skills
Agile and creative in pedagogy and student support
Prepared, yet flexible
Empathetic, yet structured
Ability to differentiate instruction and support based on student needs
Ability to consistently connect instruction to its real-world relevance, tying in concepts and theories in the classroom to students' current and future work experiences and highlighting immediate applicability
Willing to pursue and support students in multiple modalities
Technology proficient, including experience with digital tools for teaching, and teaching in either online or blended/hybrid formats
Willing and able to use data to inform instruction
Effective adult collaboration skills, able to work in teams to support student success
Experience using a learning management system
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Experienced educators who EXPECT and DESIRE to grow pedagogically

Preferred

Teaching to students of diverse backgrounds and abilities strongly preferred
Spanish-English bilingual or experience teaching English Language Learners, a plus
