Family Law Attorney- Part Time/ Contract

The Detroit Justice Center (DJC) is renowned for its innovative approach to community law practice, and they are seeking a Contract Attorney for an initial one-year term. In this role, you will support clients in addressing barriers related to family and traffic issues, along with housing law, particularly for those impacted by incarceration.

Responsibilities

Provide legal guidance in housing, family, and traffic law, particularly on suspended driver’s licenses, record expungement, and challenges to existing family cases
Conduct client interviews, create and communicate case strategies, and prepare necessary documents
Services include drafting and reviewing legal documents, including petitions, pleadings, motions, and settlement agreements; appearing on behalf of clients at status conferences, hearings, and trials; preparing witnesses; and assisting in propounding and/or responding to discovery
Communicate effectively with clients, providing guidance and advice on family law issues and answering their questions
Participate in legal clinics for driver's license restoration and criminal record expungement

Qualification

Required

Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, licensed to practice in Michigan
Minimum of 2 years of litigation experience, especially in family, traffic, and/or housing law
Independent work style, excellent communication, and commitment to community law
