Director of Engineering

Responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and scale our three core engineering teams: Unity (VR/Desktop), Full-Stack Web, and DevOps (Build and Infra)
Define, own, and drive the technical architecture for our core VR simulation platform, including ongoing efforts to enhance modularization and reusability by migrating components into our scalable configuration-as-code model
Champion and lead the development of tooling pipelines that enable and accelerate the development of new content on the platform, including technical tools and systems that streamline collaboration between teams, and build automation pipelines
Set the technical direction and standards (including secure development practices) across the product ecosystem, including our C#/Unity components, our React/Node web platform, and our AWS-based cloud infrastructure
Collaborate with senior executives, product, operations, content, and education teams to ensure the engineering roadmap aligns with business goals and customer needs, balancing technical debt, innovation, and feature delivery
Mentor and develop engineering leaders and senior individual contributors, fostering a high-performance and growth-oriented culture. Oversee the hiring, onboarding, and career development of all engineers
In collaboration with the CTO, maintain a deep understanding of current trends in VR, web technologies, and healthcare simulation, guiding innovation and ensuring the team stays ahead of the curve
Qualification
Required
B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical degree; or equivalent engineering experience
7+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership or management role, at least 3 years leading an engineering team in a high-growth company, and at least 1 year of experience working in a regulated or secured environment subject to technical standards related to security and compliance
Demonstrable experience leading, managing, or architecting in our three core engineering domains: Unity/C#, Full-Stack Web (React, Node), DevOps (AWS, container-based infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines)
Demonstrable experience as the technical leader (e.g., Engineering Director, Technical Director, Principal Engineer) for a large-scale, commercial, live service product (e.g., live-service game, B2B SaaS application with Unity components, or complex simulation system) with a multi-year development and update cycle
Architectural expertise in C# and the Unity engine, including knowledge of profiling, performance tuning, and scalable system design (e.g., decoupling of rendering engine and logic engine)
Eligible to work in the United States and willing to travel for work occasionally
Strong leadership and communication skills with an ability to work across departments and with remote teams
Proof of eligibility to work in the United States
Permanent residence in the United States
Preferred
Direct experience working in VR/AR development or immersive technologies
Familiarity with healthcare, medical simulation, or related industries
Strong understanding of agile methodologies and engineering management best practices
Experience building and managing distributed teams in a remote-first environment
