SME is seeking a Civil Engineering Co-op for the Fall 2026 term, providing an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in construction quality control activities. The role involves assessing project materials, adhering to specifications, and learning from experienced team members in various engineering practices.

Responsibilities

Your work will involve supporting field construction quality control activities

You will gain valuable experience in the assessment and evaluation of project materials including soils, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials

You will work closely with SME Team Members and contractors to learn and assist in the adherence project specifications

You may also assist SME engineering staff in performing field evaluations and quality control testing in the field

You will gain direct exposure to consulting engineering practices and have an opportunity to meet technical specialists in the areas of geotechnical engineering, environmental remediation, pavement design, and materials evaluation

Required

Some college or better in Civil Engineering or related field

Basic Computer Literacy: Our Co-ops must be comfortable using computers and software that is essential for in-field work, company communications, and report generation

Good driving record and must be able to comfortably lift and carry equipment and samples weighing up to approximately 50 - 60 pounds

Ability to work outside, at construction project sites, in various weather conditions

Must be able to sit, stand, stoop and/or kneel for long periods of time

Must be able to walk and work on uneven ground/terrain

A valid driver's license, experience driving in the U.S. and a good driving record

Preferred

Attention to detail: A keen eye for detail is important when reviewing construction plans or other project documents. Ability to pay attention to the accuracy of details in reporting is a requirement

Good problem-solvers showcasing your ability to think critically and approach challenges with a problem-solving mindset

Time management: You must be able to showcase your ability to manage your time well and meet deadlines

Good written, organizational, and oral communication skills

Good interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to work well in a team environment
