ACLU- New Jersey Supervising Attorney
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) is seeking a Supervising Attorney to lead its federal litigation practice with a focus on immigrants' rights. This role involves supervising a legal team, engaging in impactful litigation, and collaborating with various departments to advance civil rights and liberties across New Jersey.

Responsibilities
Investigate, develop, and litigate impact cases focused on advancing and protecting civil liberties and rights at all stages in federal and state courts
Lead the legal team’s federal litigation strategies across issue areas, with a focus on supporting the immigrants’ rights litigation practice
Serve as a project manager for federal immigrants’ rights litigation and work closely with department leaders on strategic decisions regarding priorities and capacity
Work closely with colleagues in Policy, Communications, and Development departments to promote change through legislative initiatives, advocacy with government officials, and public education
Build and strengthen organizational relationships and communications with allied organizations, including representing the ACLU-NJ in bar associations and providing technical assistance to attorneys representing the communities we serve
Supervise legal staff members, fellows, interns, and pro bono attorneys and help develop staff’s professional development
Contribute to a collaborative culture that centers racial justice, inclusion, and participation
Ensure compliance with ACLU-NJ policies, regulations, and quality standards
Qualification
Required
At least eight years of experience for a full-time supervising attorney position
Experience leading federal civil rights litigation
Preferred
Significant expertise in developing and litigating impact cases with at least five years of federal court experience
At least two years of experience supervising lawyers
Exceptional oral advocacy skills and ability to synthesize complex issues and communicate them effectively to diverse audiences
Experience with creative problem-solving, taking initiative, and identifying opportunities to advance the law
A strong understanding of and demonstrated commitment to racial justice, including incorporating racial justice principles into legal work
Experience in affirmative civil rights and/or habeas litigation
Relevant expertise on policing, immigration, detention, border issues, national security, or other related issues is a plus
Experience working collaboratively on a variety of projects and building strong relationships with lawyers, fellow staff members, community organizers, and coalitions
Proven project and time management skills, including a high level of organization, the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and set priorities
Ability and willingness to travel throughout the state of New Jersey, and occasionally to other states for conferences and training
Admitted to practice law in New Jersey. If not state-licensed, ability to become licensed within 12 months of joining the organization
