Director of Project Management
The State University of New York is seeking a Director of Project Management to lead the implementation of its $200M digital infrastructure investment. Responsibilities
Support SUNY's digital transformation initiatives in alignment with the SUNY Digital Transformation Project and the broader organizational strategy
Collaborate with SUNY System Administration and campus leadership to define, plan, and implement technology-driven solutions that enhance institutional effectiveness and support student and staff success
Support the development and execution of a comprehensive OIT roadmap that aligns with SUNY's long-term business and academic objectives
Collaborate with IT leadership and procurement teams to ensure optimal performance, scalability, and security of systems, networks, data centers, and cloud services
Track and analyze key IT performance metrics to inform strategic decision-making and drive continuous improvement
Lead and manage complex, large-scale IT projects from initiation through implementation, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities, budget constraints, procurement regulations, and delivery timelines
Coordinate with technical leadership and business analysts to ensure project requirements are accurately captured and addressed
Implement change management strategies to support successful technology adoption and integration across departments and campuses
Collaborate with the Business Office and IT to negotiate contracts and manage strategic relationships with technology vendors and service providers
Coordinate the development of technology bids and proposals in compliance with New York State and SUNY procurement rules and regulations
Track and present the project budget allocation, cost optimization, and resource management
Build strong partnerships across SUNY departments and campuses to understand operational and academic needs, ensuring IT solutions meet both technical and functional requirements
Serve as the primary liaison to SUNY Executive Leadership, NYS government entities (e.g., OGS, OSC, DOB, ITS), and external vendors, ensuring compliance with state regulations and fostering effective communication and coordination
Maintain robust governance structures to ensure accountability, transparency, and alignment in IT project delivery and budgeting
Collaborate with SUNY and NYS CISOs to uphold strong cybersecurity practices, data protection policies, and compliance with industry standards and regulations
Recruit, lead, and develop a multidisciplinary team of project managers
Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and high performance across the project organization
Ensure teams have the resources, training, and support needed to succeed in a fast-evolving digital environment
Provide regular updates, insights, and recommendations to SUNY leadership and other key stakeholders on project progress, risks, and successes
Translate complex technical concepts into accessible information for non-technical audiences
Qualification
Required
Bachelors degree, Master's degree preferred
Experience supervising a team of project management staff
PMP certification
Minimum 5 years relevant experience
Preferred
Project Management Methodologies
Secure Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including techniques aligned with the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI)
Systems Assurance Methodology and Quality Assurance best practices
Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Framework, along with Full Life Cycle Testing Methodologies and Application Testing strategies and tools
