Police Internship - Technical Support

Responsibilities
Observe the officer's daily duties, such as patrolling, responding to calls for service, and conducting traffic stops
Ask questions about the officer's job and the criminal justice system
Learn about the department's policies and procedures
Gain experience in emergency situations and assist the officer with non-enforcement tasks, such as paperwork or filing
Assist the Investigator with non-enforcement tasks, such as paperwork or filing
Learn the different types of investigations that are in the Durham Police Department
Learn about the different types of crime data that are collected by law enforcement agencies
How to use crime data to identify trends and patterns and how to develop crime prevention strategies
Interns may learn about specific software programs and tools that are used for crime analysis
Participate in projects that involve data collection, analysis, and reporting
Learn about the different types of community service programs that are offered by police departments
How to develop and implement community outreach programs
How to work with community partners to address crime and social problems
Interns may learn about specific programs and initiatives that are being implemented in their community
Participate in projects that involve community engagement, crime prevention, and social service delivery
Learn about the different types of forensic science disciplines, such as DNA analysis, fingerprint analysis, and crime scene investigation
Learn about the tools and techniques used in forensic science
Understand the importance of evidence collection and preservation and the role of forensic science in the criminal justice system
Participate in projects that involve processing crime scenes and analyzing evidence
Qualification
Required
Must be at least 18 years old
Enrolled in an accredited two (2) or four (4) year academic institution and classified as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior
Must be in good standing academically with your college or university
Preferred
Must be available to work at least 20 hours per week and up to 37.5 hours
Must be available to work between 8:00am until 4:30pm Monday through Friday
