The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) is offering a 10-week summer internship program aimed at building professional skills through real-world projects and mentorship. This internship focuses on preserving and promoting the Dakota language and culture, involving various responsibilities such as environmental data collection, youth education events, and collaboration with fluent speakers.

GovernmentOffice Administration

Responsibilities

Assist with water quality and quantity sampling- equipment cleaning and field data collection
Assist with aquatic vegetation, AIS and macroinvertebrate surveys and identification
Planning/participating/leading 3-4 water related youth education events
Digitizing environmental data and analyzing data with R
Inspecting storm water BMPs (best management practices)
Various field work tasks related to ongoing projects or investigations
Depending on experience - opportunities to work with GIS, statistical data analysis, or sensor programming
Outdoor work includes exposure to all weather and environmental conditions

Qualification

Dakota language proficiencyData analysis with RGIS experienceTeam collaborationBasic computer skillsOrganizational skillsVerbal communicationWritten communication

Required

Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program pertinent to the department/team to which assigned
Basic level skills in word-processing, spreadsheets, or other tools standard to the department/team to which assigned
Demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative, team environment
Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills

Benefits

Team members are eligible to participate in SMSC Gives, a community outreach initiative that organizes various opportunities in the local community.
The SMSC provides paid hours to team members to volunteer at events.
