Second Assistant Engineer
Texas A&M University at Galveston is seeking a Second Assistant Engineer to participate in the operation, maintenance, and repair of ship's equipment and systems. The role involves working primarily in machinery spaces, mentoring engineering cadets, and ensuring the safe operation of ship systems.

Responsibilities
The duties include fuel oil service and transfer equipment and systems, cooling water systems (central fresh water and salt water), chillers, refrigeration, bilge systems, oily water separator, oil content monitor
The 2nd Assistant Engineer shall assist as directed in the operation and maintenance of the ship service generator engines and controls, engine safety systems, etc
The 2nd Assistant Engineer shall be a qualified watch stander and be capable of leading and participating in an engineering watch as necessary and directed when the vessel is underway as well as while the vessel is in port
Serves as a mentor to engineering cadets in the engine license program to the extent that it does not interfere with the primary duties of the operation and maintenance of the equipment and systems enumerated above
Assists in the training and development of cadets aboard the training ship
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in maritime engineering or any equivalent combination of education and experience
Three years as a licensed engineer where the license requirement is for a license of unlimited horsepower. One of these years shall be aboard motor vessels
US Merchant Marine License- 2nd Assistant Engineer (Motor, Unlimited) current
STCW Medical Certificate
STCW Endorsements as applicable for international voyages
Valid Passport
Experience with ship automation systems, preferably Kongsberg
Practical and theoretical knowledge of shipboard auxiliary equipment and systems as mentioned above
Practical and theoretical knowledge of medium speed diesel engines and ancillary systems driving electrical generators
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work in a student-oriented training environment
Working knowledge and experience with ISM code vessel safety management systems
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Practical and theoretical knowledge of the steam & water cycle, including the condensate, feedwater, main/auxiliary steam as well as the ancillary equipment and system related to boiler operation
Must maintain USCG/STCW Medical Certificate
Willingness to work in hot, noisy workspace
Prolonged standing
Use force to lift/move heavy objects and use tools to service/repair equipment
Must be present and participate in pre-delivery activities of the vessel at the Hanwha Philadelphia Shipyard from early January 2026 thru delivery and passage to Galveston anticipated in July of 2026, during sea terms and shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston
Pre-employment and random testing for drugs and alcohol required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99 M1, 8.6.1)
Must have own transportation when ship is in ROS status at the college pier in Galveston

Must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in the University's random drug testing plan for drugs and Alcohol required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99 M1, 8.6.1)
Must be able to sail during all designated underway periods, including training crises aboard the training ship and present for shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston
