Summer 2026 Legal Intern (Appellate Advocacy & Special Litigation)

The ACLU of Northern California is seeking law students for their Summer 2026 Legal Intern position focused on appellate advocacy and special litigation. The intern will work closely with the Director of Appellate Advocacy to contribute to litigation efforts and engage in various projects related to civil liberties and civil rights.

Responsibilities

Contributing to litigation at the Department level and/or within one of the Department’s issue-based programs
Focusing on appellate advocacy projects
Working on projects at various stages of litigation, including investigating, developing, and initiating affirmative cases
Drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs
Participating in strategy meetings with other ACLU staff and coalition partners
Attending monthly department meetings where prospective litigation and policies strategy are discussed
Working across the Department’s three broad issue areas, including Criminal Law & Immigration and Democracy, Speech & Technology

Required

Currently attending law school
Demonstrate a passion for and a commitment to work for social justice and the ideals of the ACLU
Strong research, writing, and oral communication skills
Ability to articulate a commitment to work for social justice and the ideals of the ACLU
