Summer 2026 Legal Intern (Appellate Advocacy & Special Litigation)
The ACLU of Northern California is seeking law students for a Summer 2026 Legal Internship focused on appellate advocacy. The intern will work closely with the Director of Appellate Advocacy, contributing to litigation efforts and participating in strategy meetings while gaining valuable experience in civil liberties and rights advocacy.

Responsibilities
Work directly with the Director of Appellate Advocacy to advance the goals of the Legal Advocacy Department
Contribute to litigation at the Department level and/or within one of the Department's issue-based programs
Focus on appellate advocacy projects, as well as work on projects at various stages of litigation, including investigating, developing, and initiating affirmative cases; and drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs
Participate in strategy meetings with other ACLU staff and coalition partners, as well as monthly department meetings where prospective litigation and policies strategy are discussed
Work across the Department's three broad issue areas, including Criminal Law & Immigration and Democracy, Speech & Technology
Qualification
Required
Applicants must currently be attending law school
Applicants must demonstrate a passion for and a commitment to work for social justice and the ideals of the ACLU
Qualified applicants are enthusiastic, creative, and detail-oriented
Applicants have strong research, writing, and oral communication skills
Applicants can articulate a commitment to work for social justice and the ideals of the ACLU
