Assistant Professor - Data Science

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is seeking an Assistant Professor in Data Science for a tenure-track faculty position starting August 2026. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, advising students, and maintaining an active program of scholarship in data science, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Responsibilities

Responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses (if applicable) and advising students
Preparing for and holding classes, maintaining currency in the content area related to the teaching assignment, evaluating students’ work, assessing student outcomes, providing regular and substantive feedback on student work, maintaining appropriate records, and holding office hours
Expected to maintain an active, on-going program of scholarship appropriate to their discipline
Provide service to the department, college, university, community and/or professional organizations
Other duties may be assigned by the chair or dean

Required

Doctorate in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or related field. ABD will be considered. The degree must be earned by the end of the first academic year
Evidence of the ability to be an effective instructor
Evidence of clear and effective communication skills

Preferred

Experience of teaching in higher education
Evidence of ability to teach a broad range of courses in data science, statistics, and mathematics
Evidence of ability to sustain on-going research at a teaching university
Interest in collaborating with industry partners and students on applied projects
Proficiency in programming languages and tools, such as Python, R, SQL, data visualization, and version control
