Responsibilities
Performs a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in heavy/highway construction projects
Assist with, align, position and connect pipes for water, sewer and storm pipe installation
Guide equipment operators in trench operation
Load, unload, or distribute materials, machinery, or tools to and from designated locations
Clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations and erect scaffolding
Use picks, shovels, and rakes to level earth or asphalt to grade specifications
Position or dismantle forms for pouring concrete, using saws, hammers, nails or bolts
Tends pumps, compressors, or generators
Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials
Verify installation using lasers and/pr levels and grade rods
May be called upon to operate a variety of power and hand tools: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, mechanical hoists, surveying, measuring and other equipment
Maintain clean work area by disposing of trash and debris properly
Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment
Promote and adhere to the company’s safety program
Qualification
Required
High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
2 years recent experience working as Tailman (pipe installation), or equivalent experience
Active Driver's license
Able to operate a variety of tools/equipment such as hand tools and power tools
Able to listen, follow directions, and have a willingness to continue to enhance skills
Able to communicate effectively with jobsite supervisor and co-workers
General knowledge of road construction processes
Demonstrate a safety first attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures
Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public
Ability to work nights and weekends when necessary
Must have reliable transportation, and ability to travel to assigned worksites
Constant physical effort, including extended standing for at least 8 hour shift
Intermittent sitting; continuous walking on construction site
Climb intermittently
Regularly twist, bend, stoop, kneel, push/pull and crouch to perform duties
Regularly reach above shoulder level
Able to repetitively lift and carry at least 75 pounds on a regular basis, and sometimes heavier weight
Agility, balance, and manual dexterity, as well as arm-hand steadiness
Able to hear and respond to oral instructions in a noisy environment
Regularly use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; reach and grasp
Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination
Good vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
