Deputy Visuals Editor

Hearst Magazines is seeking a Deputy Visuals Editor for the San Antonio Express-News, a prominent daily newspaper in Texas. The role involves leading daily operations to produce high-quality visual content, managing a team of visual journalists, and collaborating across departments to enhance the visual storytelling of the publication.

Responsibilities

Work with talented photojournalists to make sure they are in the right place at the right time to succeed
Edit incoming visual content for quality, accuracy and relevance across platforms
Coordinate scheduling and logistics for daily assignments and breaking news
Collaborate across departments to ensure high quality from the daily photo report
Manage and coach visual journalists
Establish a tone and style for the photo and video coverage for the daily report
Generate daily and long-term story ideas
Build visual essays and other visual first narratives
Teach visual literacy skills and best visual practices to the newsroom
Daily presentation of visuals in the afternoon budget meeting
Some editing of video projects
Creation of online galleries

Required

A strong online photo editing portfolio that demonstrates visual sophistication and excellence in digital and print presentation
Smart news judgment and story pitches
Sense of urgency and the ambition to win the 24/7 news cycle
Ability to work effectively under deadline pressure
Adherence to journalistic ethics
Knowledge of media law as it applies to photography
Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with all levels of employees in the workplace
Working knowledge of photo software programs such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro and Photo Mechanic
A passion for journalism that elevates and motives others
This position will be scheduled for 40 hours per week
Some weekend, evening and holiday work will be required
A minimum of 5 years of photography experience with news organizations
Bachelor's degree in journalism, photography, video or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted

Preferred

Knowledge of the San Antonio area is preferred
Previous supervisory experience is preferred
