General Engineering Tech I/II - Traffic

The Texas Department of Transportation is looking for a General Engineering Tech I or II in their Traffic Office. The role involves performing and coordinating advanced transportation engineering operations, including construction inspection and maintenance support work, while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities
Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results
Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards
Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications
Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Monitors and/or maintains construction records to ensure contractors comply with federal requirements regarding Equal Employment Opportunity, on-the-job training programs, the Historically Underutilized Business and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise programs
Operates light and heavy equipment; performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment
Researches plan sets and reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures and design guidelines
Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the Public Information Officer
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Consults with contractors' superintendent on work progress and maintenance problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates
Serves as project leader responsible for construction inspection activities for large and/or complex construction projects or for multiple district construction projects

Required

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
General Engineering Tech I: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience
General Engineering Tech II: 6 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Valid Commercial Driver's License Class 'A' or 'B', or obtain a Class 'A' Commercial License within 180 days of hire
Extensive knowledge of applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
Extensive knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
Extensive knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Considerable knowledge of applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
Considerable knowledge of construction record auditing
Proficient skill in analyzing and organizing business and technical data
Proficient skill in using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
Proficient skill in maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Proficient skill in monitoring contracts and procedures
Physical ability to lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
Ability to walk long distances from one work site to another
Close Visual Acuity to work with data/figures, view a computer screen, and extensive reading
Visual Acuity to operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
Ability to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations
