Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice, Internal Medicine Infectious Diseases
The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is seeking a full-time physician for the role of Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice within the Division of Infectious Disease. The successful candidate will provide high-quality clinical care, engage in teaching, and contribute to the academic mission of the department while overseeing the Biocontainment Unit.
Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive outpatient and/or inpatient care for patients with infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, transplant-related infections, hospital-acquired infections, and emerging infectious diseases
Serve as Associate Medical Director of the Biocontainment Unit (BCU)
Develop, implement, and maintain protocols for the care of patients critically ill with special pathogens
Contribute to educational materials and activities to assure readiness of the BCU clinical team
Participate in NETEC workgroups and planning activities
Coordinate with other services and entities within and outside of UTMB, including public health agencies, to assure ongoing preparedness to provide clinical care
Engage in research activities that contribute to preparedness for high-consequence infectious diseases
Participate in antimicrobial stewardship programs and infection prevention initiatives
Supervise and teach medical students, residents, and fellows in both clinical and didactic infectious disease settings
Participate in departmental and divisional quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based practice initiatives
Contribute to and develop policies and procedures for clinical care in a containment setting
Consult with care teams at other facilities to provide guidance when a high-consequence infectious disease is suspected
Develop and lead trainings for UTMB and external staff based on subject matter expertise
Coordinate with internal partners such as incident command and infection control during admission of a patient
Coordinate with external partners (e.g., EMS, public health) to ensure readiness to identify and transport a patient
Oversee BCU activities, including identification of needed specialists and recruitment of new physician team members
Qualification
Required
MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school
Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease
Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Texas
Preferred
Experience in an academic medical center or teaching environment
Demonstrated involvement in scholarly activity, clinical research, quality improvement projects, or curriculum development in infectious disease
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach
