Electronics Engineering Technologist
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Engineering Division is seeking an experienced Electronics Engineering Technologist to join its team. This hands-on role involves providing critical support for operations at the 88-Inch Cyclotron, focusing on the design, development, testing, and maintenance of complex electrical and electronic systems.
Research
Responsibilities
Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions in electronic equipment and systems, ensuring timely and effective resolution
Develop and evaluate test procedures, analyze circuit and system performance requirements, and implement advanced diagnostics using scientific principles, mathematical calculations, and technical expertise
Collaborate with engineering staff to design, modify, and develop commercial and experimental circuitry, systems, and prototype models
Provide technical guidance and support to professional staff, contributing to the design and implementation of specialized technical applications
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of high-voltage and high-current power supplies
Apply extensive experience with high-power RF systems in support of complex experimental setups
Create rough sketches and engineering drawings, and develop detailed procedures for the control and operation of research experiments and tests
Write and interpret specifications for the design, maintenance, and calibration of electronic systems and equipment
Plan, coordinate, and organize resources and materials required to successfully complete assigned projects or tasks
Perform all duties in compliance with applicable Environment, Health and Safety rules and regulations as described in LBL Pub-3000 and other related documents. Proactively promote and participate in matters relating to safety and environmentally sensitive work practices
Participate in various formal ES&H training activities as required by specific duties and responsibilities
Support Lab-wide and Engineering Division Diversity-in-the-Workplace goals. Be sensitive to the needs of all employees and contribute to the establishment and maintenance of a nurturing work environment
Qualification
Required
Minimum of 4–6 years of relevant experience providing advanced technical support in electronics testing, maintenance, and development
Strong technical knowledge of electronics, electromechanical systems, scientific principles, and mathematics
Foundational experience with PLCs, TTL, ECL, CMOS, relays, and VHF/UHF/SHF microwave technologies
Extensive hands-on experience in advanced troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of complex electronic systems
Demonstrated ability to independently complete assignments using a high degree of technical creativity, innovation, and judgment
Proficiency with complex test equipment, diagnostic procedures, and a variety of hand and power tools relevant to the trade
Ability to write and interpret detailed testing, assembly, calibration, maintenance, and operational procedures
Working knowledge of engineering design practices and test documentation standards
Sufficient color vision to accurately identify wiring and component color codes, as well as safety-related indicators such as lamps, signs, and warning devices
Physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, work at heights and in confined spaces, and lift up to 50 lbs. (23 kg)
Preferred
Minimum of 6+ years of relevant experience providing advanced technical support in electronics testing, maintenance, and development
Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to junior or less-experienced staff in advanced circuit analysis, troubleshooting, repair, and calibration techniques
Lead small teams focused on specific technical tasks or project-based objectives
Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering, and/or relevant certifications such as Certified Electronics Technician (CET), FCC General Radio Operator License (Radar Endorsement preferred), or SBE Radio Broadcast Certification (CSBE, CRBE). Equivalent advanced military or industrial training in nuclear, radar, or satellite systems is also acceptable
Proficiency in computer-aided electronics drafting and design documentation
Basic understanding of Internet technologies, including address assignment
General computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace
Strong skills in planning, instruction, technical writing, and organizational coordination
Knowledge and understanding of Protective Interlock Systems. Ability to execute detailed procedures and repairs to ensure personnel are provided adequate protection against radiation hazards
