Qc Metallurgist

Responsibilities
Providing support in the coordination and evaluation of external and internal customer requirements in accordance with the capacities and capabilities of the production departments (i.e. Steel Making and Rolling), and ancillary service departments (i.e. process and product metallurgy, material handling marketing)
Provides technical training and guidance to employees
Identification, evaluation, and implementation of product and process enhancement opportunities
Planning, supervision, evaluation, and reporting of product trials and investigations on site or outside facilities
Visit customers when there is a technical problem with the product or quality issue and determine the nature of the problem
Physically inspects the product to determine resolution pertaining to material disposition and implementation of corrective action procedures
Work with customers and plant personnel to conduct investigation and study to resolve quality problems and meet customer requirements
Coordinate customer visits and tours of the Gerdau Wilton facility
Demonstrate strong leadership skills including the ability to communicate ideas, motivate team efforts to resolve quality issues, receive and give feedback, and readily adapt to new situations and challenges
Participate in developing and auditing of work standards pertaining to product quality, and stay up to date with ASTM specifications and activities
Timely and cost-conscious evaluation of customer requirements
Providing information and/or undertaking physical inspection of products to make decisions on material disposition applied to the customer
Investigation and evaluation of customer complaints, with the responsibility to formulate and implement corrective action procedures
Review customer requests for quotes and create needed materials in company's electronic systems
Engage actively in ISO 9000 program
Travel as required to provide direct technical support to sales and marketing efforts, and customer liaison duties
Qualification
Required
Background knowledge of steel manufacturing process
A four-year engineering degree from an accredited college or university in materials science field or equivalent
Good communication skills to meet the needs of various audiences
Analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to use a range of technical instruments and equipment to analyze materials
Good safety awareness for himself/herself and for others
Active participation in developing and auditing of work standards pertaining to product quality
Involvement and keeping up to date with ASTM specifications and activities
Strong leadership skills including the ability to communicate ideas, motivate team efforts to resolve quality issues, receive and give feedback, and readily adapt to new situations and challenges
Perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations
Report any situation that may have a detrimental impact on human health or the environment to their immediate supervisor
