Research Engineer I/II

Michigan Technological University is seeking a Research Engineer I/II. This position will serve as an advocate and technical resource for communities and utilities that manage environmental infrastructure, providing engineering technical support for various projects at the Center for Technology & Training.

Responsibilities

Organize, coordinate, facilitate, and/or lead training events at a variety of locations throughout Michigan
Create, design, and present drinking water and wastewater-related training materials at webinars, workshops, and conferences throughout Michigan and nationally
Participate in research-related activities awarded to the Center for Technology & Training (CTT) in conjunction with other staff and faculty, including proposal writing, conducting research, planning and management of research projects, report preparation, and presentation of findings on an as-needed basis
Provide engineering technical assistance to municipalities on environmental infrastructure issues on an as-needed basis
Provide technical expertise for engineering-related software development projects
Deliver program-related presentations to clients and related professional organizations
Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and student assistants

Required

Bachelor's degree from ABET-accredited college in civil or environmental engineering with a strong background in drinking water and wastewater systems
Successful completion of the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
A minimum of two years of municipal engineering experience in the design, construction, or planning of drinking water and wastewater projects
Knowledge of EPA and state environmental regulations relating to drinking water and wastewater systems
Professional experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Excellent oral/written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills
Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy and attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to work independently and take the initiative to solve problems
Demonstrated ability and willingness to work flexible hours
Demonstrated ability and willingness to devote up to 15% of time to travel
Possess a valid driver's license and meet Michigan Tech University's vehicle use requirements

Preferred

Advanced degree
Michigan Professional Engineer License or ability to secure one through reciprocity
Experience developing and presenting training material for professional audiences as a subject matter expert
Experience in writing proposals and/or technical research reports
Experience in project management
Experience with projects at the county, city, or state level
Experience with transportation projects
Water or wastewater operator certification and/or experience
Experience preparing state-revolving loan funding applications
Experience managing municipal or utility facility budgets
Demonstrated ability to speak before large and small groups of people
